The Layers of an Onion

Perception is power under the eyes of the beholder.
It can break you or make you depending upon how you approach it.
But there is a blurred line between perception and reality.
I may perceive myself as an upright person, when in reality others see the exact opposite.
Does this mean I am wrong, and the beholder is right?
We all grow up differently and we go down different paths.
These paths are what shape us into who we perceive ourselves to be.
But some things affected us and we did not  know that it did.
This affects how others perceive us.
Think of anything that has layers around a core, such as an onion.
To get to the center of the onion you must peel away the layers individually.
As you peel away the layers, you have a smaller core that's in the inside, where no one usually looks.
If more people understood the core of which you are, they might be more likely to perceive you the way you perceive yourself, as they understand what made you into who you are today.

  1. Interesting thoughts here, Matt, and a good analogy. Getting to exactly "who" an individual is does require peeling away the layers of self-imposed identity and personality to get at what's hidden away deep inside. And sometimes, just like an peeling an onion, you wind up crying in the process!
